Gerda Wegener

Gerda Wegener (Demark,1886-1940) was one of the greats of the fashion illustration world in the teens and 20's in Europe. Working for Vogue, La Vie Parisienne, Fantasio and many others she was famous for helping establish the long slender femme fatale with large almond eyes as the standard for beauty for the era in print ads. For much of her career Gerda's model was actually her husband Einar Wegener who went by the name Lili Elbe in the teens and 20's and died of complications from the first recorded public sex reassignment surgery in 1931.
